Grandparent Scams

A grandparent scam is a type of imposter scam where fraudsters target elderly individuals, typically grandparents, by posing as a relative in distress. The scammer often pretends to be a grandchild or other close family member who is in urgent need of money due to an emergency, such as being arrested or in a car accident. They create a sense of urgency and emotional distress, pressuring the victim to wire money or provide financial assistance quickly, often instructing them not to tell anyone. These scams exploit the victim’s love and concern for family members, making it difficult for them to recognize the fraud.

Red Flags of Grandparent Scams

Request for secrecy

The fraudster asks the victim not to tell anyone about the situation, isolating them from others who may help recognize the scam.

Urgent request for money

The scammer pressures the victim to send money quickly, often claiming they are in an emergency or dangerous situation, which is a common tactic to avoid careful consideration.

Unusual or unfamiliar contact details

The scammer may provide phone numbers, email addresses, or other contact details that don't match the family member's known information, signaling potential deception.
