Romance Scams

A romance scam occurs when a fraudster creates a fake online identity to establish a relationship with a victim, gaining their trust and affection before exploiting them for financial gain.
Scammers often use social media, dating apps, or email to connect with victims, fabricating elaborate stories about needing money for emergencies, travel expenses, or medical bills. They may claim to be in the military, working overseas, or otherwise unable to meet in person. Victims, believing they are in a genuine relationship, send money or personal information, only to realize too late that they’ve been deceived.

Red Flags of Romance Scams

Avoiding In-Person Meetings

The scammer always has an excuse for why they can’t meet in person, often claiming to be overseas for work or military service.

Requests for Money

They quickly ask for financial help, often citing emergencies like medical bills, travel expenses, or family crises.

Too Good to Be True

The person expresses strong feelings very quickly, showering the victim with affection and promises despite never having met in real life.
