Tech Support Scams

Tech support scams occur when fraudsters pose as representatives from well-known technology companies, claiming that a victim’s computer has a virus, security threat, or technical issue.
They use phone calls, pop-up warnings, emails, or fake websites to create a sense of urgency, convincing victims to grant remote access to their devices or pay for unnecessary services. Once inside the system, scammers may steal personal information, install malware, or demand payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.

Red Flags of Tech Support Scams

Unsolicited Contact

A tech support company will never call, email, or send pop-up warnings out of the blue about a supposed issue with your computer.

Urgency & Scare Tactics

Scammers pressure you to act immediately, claiming your device is infected or compromised to make you panic.

Remote Access

Legitimate companies don’t demand payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, nor do they ask for remote access unless you initiated the request.
